Bouma Self-Storage, Grand Rapids, MI

The History of Bouma Self-Storage

After graduating from high school, Ralph Bouma served in the U.S. Navy honorably, then graduated from Davenport University in 1959. In 1961, Ralph started with one truck delivering Grand Rapids made, new furniture and moving local household goods. As years progressed the business was expanded into a world-wide moving company affiliated with United Van Lines. Ralph visioned how necessary and parallel self-storage would be in demand with the moving services. In 1977, our first self-storage building was constructed (the first in the area) and continued expanding with a total of 10 buildings (cement block & standing seam roofs) in Comstock Park, on 8 acres along 131, just north of I-96.

In 1990 another facility was purchased at 5241 Plainfield N.E., with an office building and four self-storage buildings. As years progressed, climate controlled storage was in demand of which the lower-level of the office building was converted into state-of-the-art climate controlled units.

Security has always been the utmost importance at Bouma Self-Storage which includes touch-key pad entry, vertical computerized access security gate, infra-red beams around the entire premises, and colored digital security cameras.

As of today, Bouma has a total of 600 basic self-storage units, climate-controlled units, office suites, multiple outside R.V. parking and mobile self-storage containers.
